Paddler
This photo of my old Pathfinder canoe was taken a couple of years ago during a quick lunch stop on the River Dee in Aberdeenshire. I’ve posted it here partly to remind me of better days when I did this kind of thing for a living, but also to remind me that there is a world beyond the confines of the LCD screen which is unlikely to be bettered in the virtual. I remember joking with a colleague (now departed) that Health & Safety would probably put an end to taking kids out in boats. He suggested, with a mischievious grin, that we could sit them down in front of screens with headphones on and splash water on them from buckets. He was a man ahead of his time, full of ideas for learning and teaching. In my foggy memory I can’t remember the date we had this conversation, but I do remember that the single computer room in the college at the time had a dozen BBC Micros.
