Canoeing
This photo of my old Pathfinder canoe was taken a couple of years ago during a quick lunch stop on the River Dee in Aberdeenshire. I’ve posted it here partly to remind me of better days when I did this kind of thing for a living, but also to remind me that there is a world beyond the confines of the LCD screen which is unlikely to be bettered in the virtual. I remember joking with a colleague (now departed) that Health & Safety would probably put an end to taking kids out in boats. He suggested, with a mischievious grin, that we could sit them down in front of screens with headphones on and splash water on them from buckets. He was a man ahead of his time, full of ideas for learning and teaching. In my foggy memory I can’t remember the date we had this conversation, but I do remember that the single computer room in the college at the time had a dozen BBC Micros.
Kayaks on the beach at Sandend between Portsoy and Cullen on the Moray coast. This is a large, safe, gently sloping beach which gets reasonable surf. Its a beautiful place with a commercial campsite if you want to make a weekend of it. Parking is a little restricted and there is a height bar on the public car park which prevents roof mounted boats from entering. Please don’t obstruct the disabled parking bay. If the weather is fine and there is no surf available you can paddle round the headland to the west to Sunnyside beach. There is a considerable tidal flow along the coast so take note of this before setting out.
